Vizovice: Discover the Chateau, Folk Culture and Hotels

Vizovice Chateau is considered the most important cultural monument in Vizovice. The present-day Vizovice Chateau was built according to a design by architect František Antonín Grimm (1710–1784) in the then-modern French style and has retained this appearance to the present day. Its richly furnished interiors combine the Baroque, Rococo, Empire and Biedermeier styles. They are complemented by collections of porcelain, oriental objects and everyday items. The most valuable collection is an extensive collection of paintings from the 16th to the 19th century, including a significant body of Dutch painting and works by important Czech artists.

Culture

The townscape includes the Church of St Lawrence (Kostel sv. Vavřince), a three-nave Neoclassical church built in 1792, with a semicircular apse and a four-sided tower on the façade. It defines the appearance of the town and its urban heritage conservation zone. Its interior can be visited as part of the Otevřené brány programme of the Zlín Region, which offers free guided tours. These take place on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from May to September, except during religious services.

The park of Vizovice Chateau combines a compositionally and axially symmetrical French garden, including a viewing point at the end of a clipped lime-and-hornbeam avenue, with a freely designed English park section featuring a pond. Thus, two differently designed forms of garden stand side by side within the same park grounds.

Janův hrad is currently accessible to pedestrians; motor vehicles are prohibited from entering. Access to the building and the viewing point at Janův hrad is possible only in the presence of members of the Spolek Janův hrad Vizovice association when work is taking place there or cultural events are being held.

History

The Baťova dráha also points to a project whose traces are still visible today. It is a planned, unfinished railway section between Vizovice and Valašská Polanka. At present, traces and remains of the construction work can be found in the area from Vizovice to Pozděchov.

Distilling in Vizovice has a history dating back to the 16th century. The first written mention of spirit production dates from 1585. From the mid-18th century onward, the production of plum brandy increasingly became established.

Regional Traditions

Vizovické pečivo is a centuries-old example of Wallachian folk art. In 2024, it was added to the list of intangible elements of the traditional folk culture of the Zlín Region.

The RUDOLF JELÍNEK visitor centre presents the company’s history in restored rooms from the 1930s, the period when the company was owned by Rudolf Jelínek. Traditional production methods are shown alongside modern technology.
