Adishi at a Glance
Adishi is a high-altitude mountain village in the Caucasus and is described as one of the oldest villages in the Svaneti region. Old houses stand in front of Svan towers, with the Adishi Glacier behind them.
Culture
Adishi preserves medieval monuments, including churches with murals, houses, towers and examples of metalwork. The Adishi Gospels, a painted manuscript dated to 897, are exhibited in the Christian treasury of the Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography.
The Church of the Saviour, dating from the 10th and 11th centuries, preserves paintings from the 12th century. The two churches of St George, dating from the 11th to 12th centuries, contain artworks depicting episodes from the lives of saints. The Archangel Church dates from the 13th century and is decorated with ancient frescoes.
Nature
The Adishi Glacier is described as a landscape feature of unique value; alpine meadows lie near its terminus. On the Adishi–Iprari hiking trail, a view of the Adishi Valley Glacier opens up after crossing the river. The trail also offers views of the peaks of Tetnuldi, Shkhara, Zhangha and Rustaveli.
Hiking
On the Adishi–Iprari Trail, there is a river before the Chkhutnieri Pass where there is neither a bridge nor an obvious place to ford it. The Chkhutnieri Pass is at risk of avalanches and can only be crossed from the end of June onwards.
The Zhabeshi–Adishi hiking route is moderately difficult, 12 kilometres long and takes approximately five to six hours.
Getting There and Staying
The road from Mestia to Adishi is particularly rough and winding; a vehicle with high off-road capability is required for the final section. Visitors can stay in family-run hotels or camp near the village by the water.
Food
Routes connecting Adishi and Mulakhi lead to family-run hotels where homemade Kubdari, Chvishtari and Tashmijabi are served. Visitors can also sample fresh dairy products associated with local cattle farming.
