Culture and History
The Chkondidi Monastery is associated with King David the Builder and stands in a location overlooking the city of Martvili. The Martvili local history museum displays archaeological finds from the Early Stone Age and the Bronze Age, including tools, weapons, cult stones and jewellery. Its collection also includes coins from the 4th to the 2nd century BC, Colchis tetri, later silver coins, manuscripts and documents. The museum preserves endangered Colchian grape varieties and serves wine from its own cellar.
The Martvili Ethnographic Museum offers exhibitions and guides dealing with the city and the surrounding region. On the way up to the Martvili Monastery complex, visitors can buy embroidery, candles and souvenirs made by local nuns. The area's theatrical history also goes back a long way: a production of Shakespeare's “The Merchent of Venice” was first performed in Martvili in 1873. Salome Dadiani-Murat is described as the first female winemaker and was originally from Martvili.
Nature
The Martvili Canyon natural monument is located nearby. It is accessed via the visitor centre in Inchkhuri and offers a 700-metre-long, stone-paved circular trail with two bridges and three viewing platforms. There is also a 300-metre-long boat tour on the Abasha River.
Wine and Regional Tradition
Martvili is described as an important region of Mingrelian viticulture because of its history and natural conditions. Nearby, in Salkhino, the Dadiani summer residence has wine cellars and vineyards of the Mingrelian Ojaleshi grape variety. Visitors can taste Ojaleshi wines of different ages there, visit the Dadiani residence palace and camp nearby.
The approximate driving times to Martvili are 3 hours 45 minutes from Tbilisi, 2 hours 30 minutes from Batumi and 55 minutes from Kutaisi. A road and a cable car connect the town centre with the Martvili Monastery complex.
