Abuli: Hotels and Accommodation
Abuli contains cultural and historical evidence from various periods. The Abuli Church is designated in the village as a monument dating from the 10th century, while the Abuli fortress settlement in the surrounding area dates back to the 1st millennium BC. Culture
Abuli preserves early feudal stone crosses mounted on cubic bases and decorated with Bolnisi medallions and floral crosses. On the shore of the village lake, a seasonal pastoral settlement has been dated to the prehistoric and early feudal periods. Beside a window in the western wall of the Georgian church of Abuli, an inscription in Asomtavruli has been carved into the stone.
Two further church ruins have been preserved in Abuli, although their dating has not been established with certainty. There is also an Armenian church dating from 1884. On a small rocky hill at the western edge of Abuli, sarcophagi carved into the rock have been preserved. East of Abuli, a Bronze Age cemetery lies on the grounds of the modern cemetery. A settlement mound at the southern edge of Abuli preserves traces of defensive walls; large clay vessels from the Late Bronze Age have also been found in the Abuli area.
The Surb Astvatsatsin Church was built from finely hewn tuff and has a three-nave layout. Its western entrance is decorated with a cornice, above which an Armenian inscription has been placed. Abuli Fortress has a western and an eastern entrance, two semicircular towers, and three rectangular towers. Outside the fortress, terraced rooms are arranged on the eastern slope; a spring is located in the southern section of the fortress.
Nature
The Javakheti protected areas include Javakheti National Park and five managed reserves. The Abuli Cyclopean Fortress is a high-altitude megalithic site on Mount Patara Abuli at approximately 2,700 metres. Access is via a steep path of grass and boulders. The fortress consists of dry-built walls, an inner fortress, storage stations, and around 40 stables.
Trails
The foot of Didi Abuli can be reached by an off-road vehicle. From there, the ascent of Didi Abuli takes about two hours on foot. The hiking season on Didi Abuli extends through spring, summer, and autumn. The weather there can change several times a day.
