Likani: Hotels and Accommodations

The settlement of Likani is the endpoint of the Likani Valley Trail, an easy, 7 km, one-day circular route that begins at the Likani ranger station.

Nature and Landscape

The Likani Valley Trail crosses the Chitakhevi Ridge and offers panoramic views of the Borjomi Gorge.

Libani is located in the Borjomi Gorge on a densely forested plateau. The grounds of the Libani Sanatorium are situated at 1,368 meters above sea level.

Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park encompasses more than 85,000 hectares of native forest and alpine meadows. It includes an extensive network of twelve trails through ancient woodland. The national park offers hiking, horseback riding, cycling, snowshoeing, as well as cultural and educational tours. Shelters, picnic areas, and campsites are located along its routes.

Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park encompasses native forest, alpine meadows, and a diverse range of flora and fauna.

History and Culture

The Libani Sanatorium is associated with the architect Mikhail Kalashnikov. The Georgian scientist Nikoloz Gegechkori contributed to the construction of the sanatorium and later became its director. The former Libani Sanatorium building was granted cultural monument status in 2017. The Libani Sanatorium was an important early center in the fight against tuberculosis.

Construction of the Borjomi-Bakuriani railway began in 1897; the railway began operating in 1902.

Routes and Activities

The Nikoloz Romanov’s Trail is a three-day, 43 km route that can be traveled on foot and horseback from the Likani River Valley through the Lomismta Mountains to the Marelisi ranger station. The route passes through coniferous and mixed forests and reaches the Lomi St. Giorgi Church, with viewpoints overlooking the Caucasus.

The Footprint Trail offers views of Mariamtsminda Church and passes through areas where rare yew species listed in the Red List can be seen. The trail ends in the Kvabiskhevi Valley.

The bicycle tour on the Nikoloz Romanov’s Trail is 11 km long, difficult, and has an elevation gain of 1,200 meters. Registration at the visitor center of Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is required before the route. The cycling route crosses expanses of deciduous and coniferous forest where distant wildlife sightings are possible. The cycling tour instructions recommend bringing a first-aid kit, water, and spare parts.

After registration, the cycling tour requires a transfer by car to the Likani Valley; up to the starting point, the route follows an unpaved road.
