Culture and History
The history of the fortress began in the 9th century, when it was called Lomsia. Its complex contains an Orthodox church from the 9th century. The rebuilt fortress stands on a mountain overlooking the city.
The Samtskhe-Javakheti Historical Museum is located in the upper part of the fortress. It displays Georgian lapidary inscriptions, manuscripts, early printed works, carpets and coins, as well as archaeological, palaeographic, palaeontological, architectural and ethnographic materials. There is a tourist information centre in the lower part of the fortress.

In Akhaltsikhe, dishes made with snails are prepared, including snail khinkali. Meskhetian apokhti is salted and dried meat used as a filling for khinkali. Tatarberaki consists of thin strips of fried dough with melted butter, fried onions and crushed garlic. A stringy cheese associated with the cuisine of the surrounding area matures for several months in clay pots.
