Transalpina and Oașa

Within the municipality of Șugag, DN67C, the Transalpina, forms the backbone of the road network and runs there for a length of 62 kilometers. The Transalpina, also known as “Drumul Regelui,” leads through the Parâng Mountains, connects Sebeș and Novaci, and offers alpine landscapes as well as winding roads. In the tourist area around Șugag, Tinoavele din Luncile Prigoanei is a botanical nature reserve in the upper reaches of the Prigoana stream at an altitude of 1,380 to 1,450 meters. Tinoavele din Lunca Tărtărăului is another botanical nature reserve there, above Lake Oașa. In the tourist area around Șugag, Lake Oașa is a 460-hectare reservoir extending over 6 kilometers. The Oașa reservoir can be used for tourism purposes. Lake Oașa is suitable for watching the sunrise, nature photography and walks along the shore.

Culture and Traditions

The folklore festival “Zi-i bade cu fluiera” is held every year in the second half of May. The custom “Statu’ la vase în Lunea Paştelui” takes place on the second day of Easter in the churchyard of the municipality of Șugag in the Sebeş Valley. Sfântul Gheorghe Pelerinul was born in Șugag in 1846. A bronze bust of the renowned lawyer and writer Ionel Pop was unveiled and consecrated in the center of the municipality of Șugag. The “Nicolae Cernat” museum collection includes handcrafted objects made by the late artisan. Șugag is associated with woodcarving traditions that include winged distaffs, spoons with chains, spindles, cheese molds, shepherds’ staffs and flutes. The monument to the Romanian fallen of the First World War was erected by local residents in 1935 to commemorate the Romanian heroes who fell in the First World War.
