Culture and history

The Muzeul Dunării de Jos presents a permanent archaeological exhibition on the development of communities along the Lower Danube from prehistory to the end of the modern era. The collection includes more than 30,000 objects.

The exhibition at the Muzeul Municipal Călărași traces the life story of a member of the local community through objects. The museum also displays objects donated by residents of Călărași. It is housed in a building constructed in 1886–1887 according to plans by the architect Ion Socolescu.

The Orthodox Cathedral of Călărași was built in 1838 and is the oldest building in the city. The Palatul Prefecturii Călărași is also part of the secular architecture; it is a neoclassical monument built between 1895 and 1898.

The historical monument of Cătălui comprises remains from the Bronze Age and the Hallstatt period, as well as an architectural ensemble dating from 1560–1577. The former feudal residence and the neighboring buildings of Cătălui were converted into monks’ cells.

The Mânăstirea historical monument is an Orthodox religious monument built by Matei Basarab in 1648. The complex of the former Plătărești Monastery was built between 1639 and 1649; the former monastery is notable for its interior wall paintings.

Nature

The Iezer–Călărași bird protection nature reserve covers 3,105 hectares in the Danube floodplain. It can be reached via a national road, a county road and a local road.

Pădurea Ciornuleasa is a 73.2-hectare forest and wildlife reserve in the Bărăgan Plain. It contains trees over 130 years old, including downy oaks and ash trees.

The Ostrovul Șoimul nature reserve covers 20.1 hectares, is located on the Danube opposite Dichiseni, and features protected freshwater habitats.

Parks and activities

Călărași’s Parcul Central has a Danube promenade with benches, shade structures, trees and flower beds. The park is also a crossing point to Plaja Samskara by catamaran, boat or speedboat.

Parcul Dumbrava has an open-air stage for performances and film screenings, a cinder track and fully equipped playgrounds.

The Călărași Zoo is home to numerous bird, fish and animal species as well as exotic reptiles. The zoo’s aquarium and terrarium houses aquatic animals and exotic reptiles, including exotic fish and piranhas.

Călărași offers cycling tourism routes and the “Cursa Dunării Călărășene” competition.

Events and local offerings

“Flori de Mai” is an annual national festival of popular music dedicated to discovering and promoting young talent.

At the annual Târgul de Toamnă Călărași, vendors offer food that they prepare and sell. The 2024 edition took place from 1 to 8 September.
