Discover Dej: Churches, Synagogue and Landscapes

Dej offers a cultural gateway through the Reformed Church, also known as St. Stephen's Church. It was built between 1450 and 1504 in the late Gothic Transylvanian style. Including its sheet-metal roof, its tower is 72 metres high and features an octagonal spiral staircase.

Culture

The Reformed Church of Dej is listed as a historic monument. This means that the building combines a medieval origin with documented monument status.

The present-day Roman Catholic Church of Saint Anthony of Padua was built between 1726 and 1730 as an extension of the monastery and forms an architectural unit with it. Its features include a 45-metre-high bell tower and seven Baroque altars.

The wooden Church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel was built in Bonț in 1829–1831 and moved to Dej in 1996. As a historic monument, it is registered under code CJ-II-m-B-07596.

In the regional context of Cluj County, the north-eastern tourist route also mentions the Dej Synagogue in its presentation of the county's Jewish community. Construction began in 1907; it was inaugurated during the Passover festival in 1909. It has room for 900 worshippers.

In 1925, following an appropriate proposal, the town council decided to lay the foundations for a municipal museum. Archaeological excavations at the Roman fort in Cășeiu between 1926 and 1929 provided materials that were added to the collection of the Muzeul Municipal Dej. Religious buildings, Jewish heritage and archaeological connections thus stand side by side.

Landscape

The SomeÈ™ Valley forms the boundary between the hilly Transylvanian Plain, an agriculturally oriented region, and the SomeÈ™ Plateau. These named landscape areas give the surroundings of Dej a clear geographical structure.

In the vicinity of Dej, mining continues at the Ocna Dej Salt Mine; part of the mine has been adapted for tourist and medical purposes. The landscape context and mining history are distinct, clearly identifiable aspects of the surrounding area.
