Frata: Cultural Heritage, Village Museums and Hilly Landscape

Frata lies in the hilly landscape of the Transylvanian Plain. The Valea Frății valley gathers the municipality’s side valleys and reaches the Mureș via the Luduș stream.

In Berchieșu, in the municipality of Frata, the oak tree is estimated to be around 400 years old. The snake’s-head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris) also grows in Berchieșu; it is legally protected and threatened with extinction.

The wooden church “Pogorârea Sfântului Spirit” is registered as a protected historic monument under code CJ-II-m-B-7617. The year 1827, given as the year the building was constructed, is engraved on the entrance frame and at the base of the altar table; in 1847, the church was painted by Sollyom Ignat.

The Museum of Traditions displays old objects donated by the municipality’s residents in a room at the local school. In the Valea Sângelui area, the memorial cross, also known as “În deal la Vamoș,” commemorates 40 people who were killed in the municipality of Frata in 1848.

The traditional dance group from Frata, re-established in 2000, is also part of the cultural heritage passed down through generations. Vasile Soporan received the honorary title “Tezaur Uman Viu” (“Living Human Treasure”) in 2012. The pupils of Școala Gimnazială Frata perform in the “Frateanca” folk dance group.

The Frata forms “Bărbunc” and “Românește în ponturi” have been included since 2015 as variants of “Jocul Fecioresc” in UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage. Frata’s traditional costume is kept alive through the sewing skills passed down over generations by craftswoman Raveca Soporan.

In Soporu de Câmpie, in the municipality of Frata, the village museum is also known as “Ograda Satului” and is a private cultural attraction; it opened in July 2021. The ethnographic museum at Școala Gimnazială Frata houses traditional household items, tools for processing wool and hemp, old folk costumes, footwear more than 100 years old, hand embroidery and textiles made on a loom.

The “Jocul Satului” festival in Frata reached its 20th edition. Its programme included a parade featuring folk costumes, carriages and riders. The second edition of the harvest festival “Cununa Secerișului” was scheduled to take place in Soporu de Câmpie on 17 July at 9:00 a.m. At a Șezătoare in the municipality of Frata, traditional customs were revived and fasting dishes such as Pancove with Silvoiță, fasting cakes, Cozonaci and Colăcei were prepared.

In Soporu de Câmpie, in the municipality of Frata, “Căsuța La Mustață” at Principală 73 is listed as a local gastronomic point.

County road DJ 150 runs through the municipality of Frata along the Viișoara–Frata–Mociu route. It connects the Mociu area on DN 16 with the Câmpia Turzii area on DN 15.
