Săcuieu: Nature, Trails and Churches in the Vlădeasa Massif

Săcuieu is located on the Valea Săcuieului River in the Vlădeasa Massif, which is part of the Apuseni Mountains National Park area.

Landscape and Nature

The “Arborele de Sequoia” forest reserve is located on Dealul Domnului between Săcuieu and Rogojel. The sequoia tree near Rogojel has a base diameter of approximately two metres; its trunk divides into two trunks that grow up to 36 metres high.

Piatra Bănișorului is a landscape area protected at county level, consisting of a group of rocks that overlooks the village of Vișagu from an elevation of 1,175 metres. The protected white limestone quarry of Pietrele Albe is located in the area of Răchițele and Săcuieu on the left slope of the Valea Stanciului valley; there are caves, vertical walls and shafts there. The limestone massif offers opportunities for mountaineering and rock climbing.

The protected Drăgan Reservoir area is located within the administrative territories of the communes of Poieni and Săcuieu, on the border with Bihor County, in the upper catchment area of the Valea Drăganului valley.

Hiking and Trails

A tourist trail included in the national marking network was established to provide visitors with access to the sequoia tree near Rogojel. After passing through Săcuieu and shortly after entering Rogojel, a steep, narrow forest road leads to the sequoia tree; from there, it takes about 30 minutes to reach it on foot.

The moderately difficult, 10-kilometre hiking trail from Piatra Bănișorului via Valea Ordângușei and the sequoia trees ends in the village of Săcuieu; the positive elevation gain is 250 m, the negative elevation gain is 890 m, and the walking time is five hours uphill and four hours downhill. The Săcuieu–Arborele Sequoia–Piatra Bănișorului hiking route is marked with a yellow triangle, takes 3–4 hours and has a moderate difficulty level.

The route from Valea Odrângușa via Rogojel and Poiana Frânturilor to Cabana Vlădeasa is marked with a blue stripe, takes 3–4 hours and also has a moderate difficulty level. The Săcuieu–Vlădeasa route starts in the centre of the Săcuieu commune. It is considered accessible year-round; the marking is inadequate in places.

Săcuieu has a tourist information centre and a local tourism network. The different markings, walking times and elevation data provide you with specific information for planning a day of hiking.

Culture and Buildings

The traditional culture of the Săcuieu commune area includes old wooden houses with wooden shingle roofs, simple interiors and handmade wooden furniture. A wooden church dating from 1800 is located in the village of Vișagu, in the Săcuieu commune. In the village of Rogojel, in the Săcuieu commune, the church of “Sf. Arhangheli Mihail și Gavriil” dates from the 18th century.

The church of “Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavriil” in Săcuieu was built between 1882 and 1885 in the shape of a ship, using granite; it was covered with wooden shingles and consecrated on 14 August 1885. It preserves old liturgical and theological books, including a Pentecostarion printed in Cyrillic script in 1762 by the Episcopal Printing House of Blaj.
