Poieni – Western Carpathians, Roman Heritage and Deep Valleys

Poieni lies north of the Vlădeasa Massif in the Western Carpathians, along the upper reaches of the Crișul Repede. The “Poieni – Horhiș” component belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Dacia”.

Geographical setting

In the landscape of Poieni commune, the Săcuieul, Valea Drăganului and the Crișul Repede in the Bologa Gorge are among the representative deep valleys.

Poieni commune is traversed by the international E15 road and the Oradea–Cluj-Napoca railway line.

Nature and trails

In the area of Poieni commune, the double-curved concrete arch dam Barajul Drăgan stands on the Drăgan River above its confluence with the Valea Sebeșului, at an elevation of 1,280 m.

Lacul Drăgan lies in the area of Poieni commune at the confluence of the Drăgan and Sebeșel; the associated dam is 120 m high.

Near Poieni lies the 30 m high Cascada Moara Dracului, accessible from Cantonul Ciripa via an approximately two-hour hike.

The area around Lacul Drăgan is well suited to off-road and mountain biking activities.

The Tranișu–Cabana Vlădeasa tourist route takes 4–5 hours and is 15 km long. The different distance and time details help you structure your own daily planning without forcing different paths and places into a single route.

Culture and history

The Roman surveillance tower “Turnul roman de la Poieni – Dâmbul Vărădeştilor 1” lies east of Poieni at the eastern edge of the Roman frontier wall and dates from the Roman period, particularly from the 2nd to 3rd centuries AD.

The Roman watchtower “Turnul roman de la Poieni – Cetăţea” lies at the southwestern end of a mountain spur on a 646 m high hill and offers expansive views of the surrounding landscape.

Poieni is documented under the historical names Kyssebes, Kis-Sebes, Sebeșul Mic and Poieni; the records are dated to the years 1500, 1755, 1850 and 1854.

Poieni railway station is a historic monument dating from 1900.

The “Granitul” quarry in Poieni was established in 1875 in connection with the construction of the Cluj–Oradea railway line.

Historically, stone from the Poieni quarry was transported on rafts along the Crișul Repede to Oradea, where it was used for the foundations of large buildings.

In the vicinity of Poieni, an Orthodox wooden church stands in Tranișu; it was built between 2012 and 2016.

Bologa Castle is located in the vicinity of Poieni. It is one of the most significant medieval fortresses in Transylvania and is particularly distinguished by its round donjon.

The Bologa water mill is located in the vicinity of Poieni. It is a functioning example of traditional rural architecture in Transylvania, preserved in the courtyard of local residents and regarded as an open-air museum.

Poieni is associated with the inter-county folklore festival “Muguri de dor”.
