In Suatu, cultural history and natural features come together through specific names, buildings and landscape forms. Those who want to explore a place through its historical layers and spatial relationships will find various points of reference here rather than a single, isolated attraction. Suatu features historical evidence as well as protected nature and different landscape forms; cultural and natural perspectives stand alongside each other as two distinct themes of the place.

Culture and History

The Unitarian church of Suatu, built in the 15th century, is considered one of the region’s most valuable historical monuments. Three versions of the wolf coat of arms of the noble Suki family can be found on and inside the church: one is mounted on the church building above the southern main entrance, while two others are located inside.

The village of Suatu was first mentioned in historical records in 1213 under the name VILLA ZUAT. The old Unitarian church is located on the site of the former village of Suatu de Sus. It was originally built in the 13th century as a Roman Catholic church in the Gothic style; its southern portal dates from the 15th century.

The Reformed Calvinist church, built in 1682, is located on the site of the former village of Suatu de Jos. Inside this church is the coat of arms of the noble Bornemisza family from Ineu, called Jenö in Hungarian.

Churches in the Surrounding Area

There are four churches in the vicinity of Suatu: Biserica Reformată Cojocna, Biserica Romano-Catolică Cojocna as a Roman Catholic church, Biserica Greco-Catolică Cojocna as a Greek Catholic church, and Biserica Ortodoxă Corpadea as an Orthodox church.

Nature and Landscape

In the communal protected area where the Fânațele Suatu nature reserve is located, Astragalus peterfii is the primary conservation target. The Fânațele Suatu I and II nature reserve covers 8.2 hectares.

The landscape names distinguish between different forms and spatial levels: Dealul Chiştelec is a hill in the vicinity of Suatu, and Dealul Fundăturii is also a hill in the surrounding area. In the wider regional surroundings, Dealul Zeicu is a peak and Dealul Sălaşului is a mountain.

The DJ 161H road from DN16 to Suatu is considered one of the most important access routes to the protected area.
