Bechet between the Danube floodplain and history

The Danube floodplain of Bechet offers views of the river’s floodplain landscapes. Picnics and barbecue parties can be held in the Danube floodplain within the city limits of Bechet. The Muzeul Sătesc Bechet displays ethnographic objects, exhibits on local history and works of visual art. The museum extends across seven exhibition rooms. The seven rooms cover topics ranging from history and textiles to blacksmithing and sheep farming. The seven rooms structure the museum visit and arrange the various subject areas spatially. The Sf. Gheorghe Church was built between 1861 and 1871 on the site of an earlier wooden church. This wooden church had already been built in 1808. The building history extends from the wooden church erected in 1808 to the present church building constructed between 1861 and 1871. The present building is in the Byzantine style and has the shape of a cross. At the same site, the later-built church followed the former wooden church. Another historical attraction is the Bechet Roman Fort. It is one of the most visited sights in the city of Bechet.

Bechet can be reached by car via several road connections. The DN 54A leads from Corabia to Bechet, while the DN 55 connects the city with Craiova. Another route runs via the DN 55A and passes through Ostroveni and Calafat. Before travelling by car, current route conditions and the applicable traffic information should be checked.

The “Bordeiașul” folklore ensemble from Bechet was founded in 1986 at Bechet Theoretical High School. Its initiator was the now-deceased teacher Victoria Gheorghe. In addition to this folklore group, the International Folklore Festival “Dunărind cu Dunărea” is part of the city’s cultural heritage. The festival was traditionally held in Bechet every year on 15 August.
