Baia de Fier: Caves, Gorges and Historic Churches

The ROSCI0128 Nordul Gorjului de Est Site of Community Importance includes protected areas in Baia de Fier, such as Peștera Muierilor. Peștera Iedului in Baia de Fier is also part of the protected areas within this site. A fragment of a female skull from Peștera Muierilor has been dated to approximately 30,000 years ago. Thus, in Baia de Fier, geological spaces exist alongside a human past reaching far back in time.

The pastoral folklore festival “Coborâtul oilor de la munte” has taken place annually in Baia de Fier since 1993. Baia de Fier also has a museum collection devoted to ethnography and local history. The festival’s annual rhythm and the collection’s thematic focus lead from living traditions to the documented ways of life of the locality. Festival dates should be checked before travelling if the visit is intended to coincide with this event. The opening hours of the museum collection and cave should be checked for current information before arrival.

The historic “Toți Sfinții” church dates from the construction period between 1749 and 1753 and is dated to 1750. It has original paintings and an enclosing wall. The Orthodox wooden church “Sf. Arhangheli” is a wooden structure dating from 1809. The Petru-Flondor estate comprises well-preserved houses and outbuildings from the 20th century. The historic architectural evidence therefore ranges from an 18th-century church through a 19th-century wooden structure to a 20th-century estate complex.

The via ferrata routes in Cheile Galbenului in Baia de Fier comprise 21 possible ascent variants of varying length and difficulty. The variants therefore do not form a uniform ascent, but differ both in scope and difficulty level. The via ferrata route near Peștera Muierilor can also be used at night. Current route conditions should be checked before undertaking any of the via ferrata routes. For a night ascent, the applicable guidance should also be checked in advance.

Baia de Fier can be reached from Târgu Jiu via DN 67. Cheile Galbenului is accessible by car. The route from Baia de Fier to Cabana Peștera Muierii follows a modernised road and takes 45 minutes. When travelling there, current information on route conditions should be checked before setting out.
