Târgu Jiu: Brâncuși Art, Museums and Theatre

Culture and History

The Brâncuși Monumental Ensemble of Târgu Jiu is arranged along a 1,500-metre conceptual axis.

The ensemble was built between 1937 and 1938. It was created to commemorate the supreme sacrifice of Romanian soldiers, police officers and ordinary citizens who died defending the city of Târgu Jiu during the First World War. Its period of creation and commemorative function are therefore inseparable from its historical classification.

The Muzeul de Istorie și Arheologie Alexandru Ștefulescu was formally founded on 16 July 1894. This precise date adds an independent historical accent alongside the more recent monumental ensemble.

The Muzeul Național Constantin Brâncuși is housed in Casa Barbu Gănescu. Constantin Brâncuși stayed in this building while working on the Calea Eroilor monumental ensemble in Târgu Jiu in 1937–1938.

The museum promotes the life and work of sculptor Constantin Brâncuși, focusing on the period when he lived and worked in Gorj County. One of its aims is also to organise temporary exhibitions featuring works by Constantin Brâncuși.

Museums and Collections

The Muzeul Județean Gorj Alexandru Ștefulescu includes a gallery presenting notable figures from Gorj from the 16th century onwards. The museum also preserves more than 24,000 objects relating to the history of Gorj. The gallery and collection therefore focus on different aspects of regional history.

The Muzeul de Artă houses an extensive collection of paintings and artworks by local artists, as well as various religious art objects and sculptures. The opening hours of the Muzeul de Artă – Târgu Jiu are Monday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00.
