Rânca: Mountain Landscapes, Hiking Trails and Winter Sports

Rânca lies at an altitude of approximately 1,600 m on the southern slope of the Parâng Mountains, on Cornesu Mare Mountain. Around the village, named peaks, a nature reserve, marked trails, winter sports and cultural attractions come together to create a diverse picture of the mountain region.

Altitude and Landscape

The immediate surroundings of Rânca include the peaks of Corneșul Mic, Rânca, Dălbanu and Plopul. Each of these names refers to a separate point in the mountain area. Lacul Galcescu is designated a natural monument. Its surroundings form a geological, floristic and landscape nature reserve, complementing the peaks with a protected natural area.

The landscape around Rânca thus extends from individual mountain peaks to the surroundings of Lacul Galcescu. It is precisely this combination of altitude, mountain names and nature reserve that makes the area's natural points of reference concrete, without reducing them to a single destination.

Trails and Views

The route from Novaci marked with a red triangle reaches Rânca via Alpine Road 67 C. A route marked with a red band leads from the Parâng ridge over Urdele Pass to Rânca. The two trail descriptions therefore refer to different starting points and routes within the mountain area.

Rânca's hiking trails lead to viewpoints such as the Vârful Mohor peak. Alongside the marked ascents, this provides a named destination on the trails around the village. For hiking days, the two markings, Urdele Pass and Vârful Mohor can be directly connected with the respective route descriptions.

Winter and Leisure

The M1 ski slope has floodlighting and a sound system. The Rânca 1 ski slope is located on Muntele Papusa and is equipped with a four-seat chairlift. The named slopes therefore differ in their respective described facilities and their connection to Muntele Papusa.

At the entrance to the resort of Rânca from the direction of Novaci, the Rânca adventure park is located in a forest. In addition to the ski slopes, this park is therefore also one of the explicitly named leisure destinations at the entrance to the resort.

Culture and Surroundings

The Muzeul Civilizației Montane in Rânca was inaugurated in September 2012. The Mănăstirea Polovragi monastery is also located in the surroundings of Rânca. Both cultural attractions are in the immediate vicinity of the village, while other destinations extend into the wider region.

These include the Mânăstirea Horezu monastery, the Biserica Ortodoxă Nouă Ciungetu Orthodox church and the Biserica Bengeşti-Ciocadia church. Rânca's cultural surroundings therefore range from the museum inaugurated in the village in 2012 to monasteries and churches in the wider region.
