Runcu: Cheile Sohodolului, Nature and Culture
Cheile Sohodolului features numerous special climbing routes and is located in the northern part of the village of Runcu. Access to Cheile Sohodolului is via DN67D; the road through the gorges can be used by car, bicycle or on foot.
Nature
The Valea Sohodolului area is considered a floristic reserve with 345 species of vascular plants from 71 families. Peștera Popii at the entrance to Cheile Sohodolului contains black anthropomorphic rock paintings. Izbucul Jaleșului can be reached via the road of the same name, a small wooden footbridge over the Jaleș and a subsequent path. For planning purposes, the landscape, route and mode of transport can be considered separately.
Paths and Access
Toaia Dracilor Waterfall can be reached from Cheile Sohodolului through the Cheile Gropului cu Apa canyon. There is no path; for the rest of the route, it is preferable to continue along the streambed with a guide. A marked trail leads to Inelul Doamnei and takes approximately one hour at a leisurely walking pace. Inelul Doamnei is a limestone formation shaped by the wind and changes to the relief over thousands of years. The caves in Cheile Sohodolului and Muntele Pleșa are not open to the general public and can only be visited together with knowledgeable members of caving associations. You can consider the time required and the form of access separately when planning your day. For different interests, time, mode of movement and access can be used as clear points of comparison; nature, climbing, culture and archaeology remain separate focal points.
Culture and History
The Maria Apostol Memorial House is located in the centre of Runcu and displays personal belongings of the folk singer, traditional objects from the Gorj region and her “Floarea din grădină” trophy. In the centre of the village of Runcu are the ruins of a medieval structure from the 15th and 16th centuries. The La Cruce archaeological settlement is attributed to the Bronze Age Coțofeni culture. La Cruce is also attributed to the Geto-Dacian period of the 3rd to 2nd centuries BC. Culture, archaeology and nature can be considered separate focal points for personal selection.
When comparing hotels in Runcu, you can review the travel period, room category and cancellation conditions side by side. The three criteria can be compared separately with the planned duration, desired activities and different forms of access. This helps you keep the practical comparison points of trip planning in view when you have several interests. Accommodation criteria remain a separate level: nature trails, climbing routes, culture and archaeology can be considered independently as personal focal points. This provides a clear basis for selection without combining the different topics into a single travel profile.
