Săpânța – Village Art, Monastic History and Nature

Culture

The Merry Cemetery was the life’s work of the sculptor, painter and folk poet Ion Stan Pătraș and was continued by his students. Dumitru Pop (Tincu) takes up the original decorative forms and the characteristic color scheme that Stan Ion Pătraș introduced at the Merry Cemetery in Săpânța, and reinterprets them.

The Casa Memorială “Stan Ioan Pătraș” is also part of the artistic setting. It comprises the artist’s house, the stable and the workshop in the courtyard. Inside, traditional furniture, household textiles and a significant collection of objects made by Stan Ioan Pătraș himself are on display. Names, forms, colors, rooms and objects make the various aspects of this cultural theme tangible.

Monastic History

The present-day Săpânța-Peri Monastery was founded in 1997 in the immediate vicinity of Săpânța; construction took place between 1998 and 2003, not far from the Tisa River.

Săpânța Peri Monastery was rebuilt after the former monastery was destroyed in 1703. The rebuilding took place toward the end of the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century, not far from the original site, which is now located in Ukraine. The bell tower of Săpânța-Peri Monastery rises 75 meters above the ground.

Nature and Routes

Șipot Waterfall has a large plunge pool below the waterfall, formed by the erosion caused by the falling water. The waterfall is also accessible by off-road vehicle. There is a parking area immediately above it, from which you can walk down to the top of the waterfall.

Săpânța can be reached from Sighetu Marmației or via Negrești-Oaș. The tourist route from Cariera Capul Feței through the Nadoșa Valley to Șipot Waterfall is approximately 5 to 6 kilometers long and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours each way. When planning, you can compare the approximate hiking distance with the journey by off-road vehicle. The approach via Sighetu Marmației or Negrești-Oaș is a separate planning consideration. The distance and walking time make the hiking section a distinct time and distance factor; the off-road vehicle option and the parking area, by contrast, are part of the waterfall’s described accessibility.
