Făget: Bega Terrace, Wooden Churches and Ceramic Culture

Făget lies on the northwestern edge of the Poiana-Ruscă Mountains and on the lower terrace of the Bega River. The mountain edge and the river terrace thus bring together two different landscape settings.

Historical traces

A medieval fortification stands on the northern outskirts of Făget. It was first mentioned in 1548 and has been partially researched and restored. In Povergina, the wooden church is a historic monument and is regarded as one of the most distinctive wooden churches in the Banat. It was built in 1782 in the Baroque style. The wooden church in Bătești was built in the 18th century. The childhood home of the poet Traian Iancu was converted into the Traian Iancu Memorial House.

Făget and the places mentioned therefore contain several forms of historical heritage side by side: a fortification on the outskirts, two wooden churches from different periods and a memorial house commemorating a poet. The places thus differ both in their architectural form and in their historical or literary significance.

Ceramics and the annual cycle

A pottery market takes place every year in August at the Jupânești center. Jupânești ceramics are distinguished by a fine, iron-oxide-rich reddish clay melt, geometric decorations engraved exclusively in red and elegant shapes. Jupânești is the only still-active center of pottery craftsmanship in Timiș County.

The market date in August adds a recurring occasion to the permanently recognizable characteristics of the ceramics. The pieces are particularly characterized by the combination of the reddish clay melt, the exclusively red geometric engravings and the elegant shapes.

Transport connections

National road DN 68A between Ilia and Lugoj runs through Făget. The Lugoj–Făget–Ilia railway line began operating on September 17, 1898, and connects the Timiș Valley with the Mureș Valley. Road and rail thus represent different regional connections: the road runs through Făget, while the railway connects two river valleys.

The regional context therefore includes both the connection between Ilia and Lugoj and the historic railway connection between the Timiș Valley and the Mureș Valley. The two transport corridors belong to different modes of transport and describe Făget from two different spatial perspectives.

Nature

The Bătești daffodil meadow, also known as the Flower Garden of the Banat, has been a nature reserve of national interest since 1995. The nature reserve covers 20 ha and serves to protect Narcissus poeticus. The designation as the Flower Garden of the Banat and the protection status both refer to the naming and classification of the same area.
