Geography

Tomești is one of the settlements arranged along the course of the Bega from south to north. Its geographical location connects the town with the river course and the piedmont zone along the DJ 684.

Nature

In the village of Românești, the Peștera cu apă lies on the left slope of the Pustânii Valley within the municipality of Tomești. Inside, a sequence of wide-vaulted chambers alternates with narrower sections; lateral sinter curtains, stalactites and stalagmites are among the described formations.

The Peștera cu apă is 370 m long, arranged horizontally on three levels, and has an entrance 9.5 m wide and 2 m high.

Culture and History

The wooden church in the village of Românești dates from the 17th century. It was built from thick oak beams joined together without nails.

An old wooden church in Tomești was built around 1750; the building was dismantled in 1952 and rebuilt from wood at the same location in 1957. The wooden church rebuilt at the same location in 1957 has a galvanized sheet-metal roof, a rubble-stone foundation and a single tower.

The church of Mănăstirea Românești was founded in 1912, completed in 1929 and consecrated in 1931. Mănăstirea Românești celebrates its patronal feast on July 20 and on the Friday of Bright Week.

In the villages of Românești, Tomești and Baloșești, the Dube-Colind tradition is maintained. Traditional dress is worn today at folklore performances in the region around Tomești.

Wooden watermills stand in Tomești on the Bega. The tradition of symphonic concerts in Peștera Românești began in 1984 on the initiative of Speotimiș founder and physician Constantin Lupu.

Trails and Events

The Luncani–Pârâul Mare–Padeș mountain route is easy in its first section, becomes considerably steeper in the second section and has an elevation difference of 1,070 m. Another hiking route leads from Valea lui Liman via Luncani and Valea Topla to Cabana Căpriorul in the municipality of Nădrag and runs along forest roads and woodland paths.

From DN 68A near Coșava, Românești can be reached via 4 km of the paved DJ 684 county road. The different trail characteristics provide a clear comparison for planning between a mountain route that becomes steeper and a route along forest roads and woodland paths.

The Serbările muntelui in Valea lui Liman take place every year from May to September on the third Sunday of each month. The Nedeea românilor de pretutindeni is celebrated every August in Valea lui Liman as a festival of traditional singing and dancing.
