Lazaret in the Olt Valley: History and Hiking Routes

The local history of Lazaret is connected to a specific quarantine site: during the plague epidemic of 1660–1661, a quarantine station was established at the confluence of the Lotrioara stream and the Olt River.

History

From the 18th century onward, the quarantine facility was relocated 9 km south of Turnu-Roșu, to the confluence of the Lotrioara stream and the Olt River, at the place known as “Lazaret.”

Location and Transport

Lazaret is located on the DN7 in the Olt Valley. The connection between Boița and Lazaret runs via the DN7 and the E81 along the same transport corridor. The historic railway through the Olt Valley passed through Lazaret, which was referred to as the Turnu Roșu quarantine station. Near Lazaret, the Lotrioara stream flows into the Olt River.

The Lazaret–Valea Lotrioara–Pârâul Cailor–Iaru–Cabana Prejba route is 18 km long and is listed as taking 5–6 hours; it climbs from 350 m to 1,645 m. The Lazaret–Lotrioara–Cantonul Silvic Gârcu–Valea Sterpului–Vf. Sterpului route is 22 km long and is listed as taking 6–7 hours; it climbs from 350 m to 2,142 m.

The Valea Oltului–Curmătura Surului (07MN01A) route is classified as difficult, is 17.20 km long, and is listed as taking 9:00 hours. Access to this route passes over a bridge across the Olt before Lazaret and then over a CFR bridge before entering the forest.

Route 07MN01 runs from the Valea Oltului via Vârful Şerbota, Saua Podragului, Fereastra Mare a Sâmbetei, and Curmătura Lerescului to Vârful Tămaşul Mare.
