Voineasa between the Lotru Valley and Transalpina

Voineasa combines its location in the Lotru Mountains with a landscape of valleys, coniferous forests and distinctive routes. The town lies at an altitude of about 650 metres, stretches along the Lotru Valley and is characterised by extensive coniferous forests. Voineasa can be reached via the DN 7A from Râmnicu Vâlcea through Brezoi along a route of approximately 70 kilometres.

Landscape and climate

Voineasa has an inland mountain climate with cool summers and moderately cold winters. The Lotru flows through the town; its course offers good conditions for trout fishing.

Nature and routes

Numerous tourist routes to the Cataractele Lotrului start from Voineasa. Other tourist routes lead to the Latorița nature reserve, the Ciunget Hydroelectric Power Station and Lake Vidra. The different types of destinations therefore range from waterfalls and protected areas to technical facilities and a large reservoir.

The Latorița Gorge offers varied hiking trails for people with different levels of experience. The gorge extends for about 10 kilometres and includes rocky sections as well as narrow paths; it is also home to the approximately 15-metre-high Apa Spânzurată Waterfall. Different trail lengths and landscape types can be compared during planning.

Lake Vidra is an artificial reservoir created in 1972. It has a volume of 340 million cubic metres, an area of 940 hectares and is 9 kilometres long. Spruce forests surround Lake Vidra.

Winter and Transalpina

In winter, the Transalpina ski area can be reached via the route Brezoi (DN7 – E81) – Malaia – Voineasa – Obârșia Lotrului. The ski area is located near Obârșia Lotrului, 34 kilometres from Voineasa.

In the Transalpina ski area, a gondola lift runs from the valley station at 1,350 metres to an altitude of 1,800 metres. A button lift then continues up to 2,000 metres at Vârful Bora. The stated elevations make the layout of the ski area along the ascent line comprehensible.

At Pasul Urdele, the Transalpina reaches a maximum altitude of 2,145 metres and connects Transylvania with Oltenia. Because of heavy snowfall, it is closed to motorised traffic in winter.

History and orientation

The construction of the Lotru–Ciunget hydroelectric power plant in 1960 led to the creation of the holiday resorts of Voineasa and Vidra.

Voineasa has a public local SALVAMONT mountain rescue service, founded in 2018.
