Soveja – Monastery History, Hiking Trails and Viewpoints
Soveja can be understood through historical and scenic points of reference. Mănăstirea Soveja Monastery was built by Matei Basarab between 1640 and 1645 and is located at the entrance to the resort town of Soveja.
Culture and History
In 1846, the revolutionary Alecu Russo was exiled to Mănăstirea Soveja Monastery. During this time, he discovered and collected the famous folk ballad “Miorița”.
A museum was established in a building behind the Mausoleum of the Heroes of Soveja. Photographic documentary material and weapons used by Romanian soldiers during the battles of the First World War were exhibited there.
When comparing cultural topics, architectural history, literary history and military history can be considered separately.
