Staré Hory combines extensive trails through the mountainous landscape with a multifaceted mining and pilgrimage history. This character is particularly evident on the “Lesnícky náučný chodník Jozefa Dekreta Matejovie” educational trail: It runs for 9.5 km from Dolný Jelenec to Staré Hory and includes 13 stations. The trail is self-guided, linear in design, and intended for pedestrians. It can be walked in both directions and is usable year-round.

Trails

Two other routes also lead to Staré Hory. The first stage of the “Barborská cesta” runs from Banská Bystrica to Staré Hory. The “Partizánsky chodník” educational trail connects Špania Dolina with Staré Hory; it is 11 km long and has five stations. Another distinctive landscape feature is Jelenec, a rocky strip approximately 600 metres long above the main road between Staré Hory and Donovaly. It stretches westward from the monument to Jozef Dekret Matejovie towards Dolný Jelenec.

Nature

The “Lesnícky náučný chodník Jozefa Dekreta Matejovie” educational trail runs through Veľká Fatra National Park and the protected Dekretov porast area. Above Rybô, this stand covers 6.22 ha. Valuable larches, spruces, firs, and beeches, almost 200 years old, grow there. Staré Hory is also home to Majerova skala, a protected natural formation safeguarding a distinctive rock formation with protected and endangered plant and animal species.

Location

The E77 trunk road runs through Staré Hory and lies on the route between Banská Bystrica and Ružomberok. The village is therefore also connected to a road link designated at the regional level, while the trails and natural areas described mark their own spatial relationships within the landscape.

History and Culture

Staré Hory was established as a mining settlement in the 13th century. A private permanent exhibition next to the “Kaplnka sv. Anny” chapel documents the mining history of Staré Hory and the associated mining settlements through texts and images. This exhibition displays 377 collection objects. In addition, the regional local-history exhibition at Staré Hory 106 opened in 2010.

Several memorial sites commemorate personalities and events from the region. The MOR-HO monument in the Dolný Jelenec settlement of Staré Hory is dedicated to the members of the fifth battalion of the “Pomstiteľ” partisan brigade. The monument to Jozef Dekret Matejovie near Dolný Jelenec was unveiled on 16 September 1913 and is considered the oldest monument dedicated to him. The living regional culture also includes Starohorská bobbin lace-making, a characteristic expression of folk art associated with the mining tradition of the municipality of Staré Hory in the Banská Bystrica District. Every year, Staré Hory also holds a public commemorative event for the SNP with a cultural and sports programme.

Pilgrimage

The Marian pilgrimage tradition of Staré Hory dates back to the end of the 15th century. The “Bazilika návštevy Panny Márie” Basilica is a centre of Marian devotion in the Diocese of Banská Bystrica. The “Rímskokatolícky Kostol Návštívenia Panny Márie” church in Staré Hory was granted the status of a minor basilica in 1990.

Smaller religious buildings are also part of this context. Today, Studnička refers to an expanded pilgrimage complex. The “Kaplnka sv. Anny” chapel in Staré Hory was built in 1794, renovated in 1832, and given new interior furnishings; it continues to serve its religious purpose. The Calvary of Staré Hory includes the “Kaplnka Panny Márie Sedembolestnej” chapel, which dates from 1893.
