Turecká: Krížna, hiking routes and Slovak traditions

From Saľaška in Turecká, an ascent to Krížna covers 4.2 kilometres; the duration is 2:38 hours and 787 metres of elevation gain must be overcome. At 1,574 metres, Krížna is the third-highest peak in the Great Fatra. Its distinctive, treeless massif offers extensive panoramic views.

Nature and trails

Three red-marked hiking trails meet at the summit of Krížna. A classic circular route from Turecká via Kráľova studňa is approximately 18.5 kilometres long and has 1,100 metres of elevation gain. For personal planning, different route lengths, durations and tour formats can be compared side by side.

The Velká Fatra educational trail begins at a car park in Turecká, follows a yellow-marked trail to the starting point near Pod Líškou and ends at Chata pod Borišovom. Nine stations explain the different relief formation in the rocks of the Choč and Krížna nappes. In Turecká and its surroundings, there are opportunities for hiking and sport, as well as numerous marked and unmarked trails. Around Turecká, mountain-bike routes connect the valleys with more distant destinations such as Kráľova Studňa. There are also short excursions, longer hikes and multi-day tours.

Getting there and winter sports

The main road connection to Turecká leads from Banská Bystrica towards Donovaly and Ružomberok; in Staré Hory, turn off towards Turecká. A bus connection is listed on the Banská Bystrica–Špania Dolina–Dolný Harmanec–Staré Hory–Turecká corridor.

Turecká is one of the most popular ski resorts in the Great Fatra. The area is accessible via hiking trails, the Turecká–Líška ski run and from Suchá dolina over the ridge of Dlhý Grúň. Ski touring is possible from 1 November to 31 March. In 2014, the SKI Turecká ski resort had three lifts and 1.3 kilometres of ski runs. In 2014, cross-country skiing, sledging and alpine skiing were among the seasonal sports at the SKI Turecká ski resort. The SKI Turecká ski resort is not in operation.

Food and traditions

At the beginning of summer, Slovak and European championships in cooking and eating bryndzové halušky are held in Turecká; they include demonstrations of folk handicrafts and the sale of traditional products. At the Halušky Festival in Turecká on 24 and 25 July 2026, there was a competition, crafts, entertainment, halušky for visitors, refreshments and a cultural programme.

The Krňačky race in Turecká is connected with former carnival traditions and uses traditional sledges built without nails or screws. The tradition of Krňačky races in Turecká has existed since 1957. There were four sheepfolds on the bare massif of Krížna.
