Hronsek: UNESCO Church and Water Castle

Hronsek’s historical and cultural features include a rare historic landmark, regional music and Hronsek Water Castle. The wooden articulated evangelical church was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on 7 July 2008. This means that the village is home to a precisely dated monument whose construction history and surroundings are connected with further historical traces within a small area.

Culture and History

Construction of the articulated church began on 23 October 1725 and was completed in autumn 1726. Outside the main season, from September to June, guided tours of the church are available only on request or by prior arrangement. The historic buildings also include the wooden bell tower: it is a Baroque structure from the early 18th century, stands on the church grounds about 30 metres from the church building and continues to serve its purpose.

At Hronsek Water Castle, guided tours with commentary are offered through the restored rooms and covering the history of the castle. Its interiors preserve historic wall paintings. Hronsek is also associated with the memorial house, which formerly served as a parsonage and is connected with August Horislav Krčméry. The village’s Baroque manor house dates from 1775 and has corner bastions. It is currently closed to the public and is being restored.

Another cultural element is Ľudová hudba Hronsečania. The group offers programmes featuring folk song concerts for local celebrations, folklore days, festivals, fairs and outdoor events. Its repertoire includes folk songs from Hronsek and its surroundings, the Pohronie region and Podpoľanie.

Routes and Regional Connections

Hronsek is part of the Barborská cesta. This route connects Banská Bystrica, Kremnica and Banská Štiavnica through a region historically shaped by mining, where technical, religious and cultural heritage has been preserved. The village is therefore part of an explicitly regional connection that brings together several historic towns and different forms of cultural heritage.

For cycling, the Rodinná cestička route is listed. It is an easy, 21-kilometre half-day cycling tour connecting Banská Bystrica with Zvolen via Vlkanová, Hronsek, Veľká Lúka and Sliač. The section between Veľká Lúka and Hronsek runs along a road that is also intended for motor vehicles.

Nature and Everyday Life

The protected group of trees “Lipy pri Hronseckom kostolíku” is located in the churchyard. It consists of six linden trees. The six protected linden trees by the church in Hronsek are estimated to be 200 to 250 years old.

The local amenities also include Hostinec Hronsek. A lunch menu is served there daily, either in the restaurant or, in good weather, on the outdoor terraces.
