The Podkonický náučný chodník nature trail leads from the center of Podkonice to Pleše. Its longer section is 2.6 kilometers long and has seven stations. Together, the two routes are almost five kilometers long, run at elevations between 550 and 976 meters, and are considered family-friendly.
Nature
Podkonice lies at the foot of the southern slopes of the Low Tatras and the Starohorské vrchy. In addition to the nature trail, the Donovaly–Podkonice cycling route is also part of the local network of trails: It ends at a cycling signpost next to the church in Podkonice. Thus, an elevated trail with stations and a designated cycling connection meet within the village, without confusing their respective starting and ending points.
Winter and Skiing History
The Podkonice–Pleše ski area offers skiing on natural snow. It has easy and intermediate runs with a total length of 5,172 meters. The area is located 2.5 kilometers from Podkonice, at an elevation of 800 to 987 meters, on the southeastern side of the Low Tatras. The ski area also includes a nine-kilometer cross-country skiing trail. On site, there is a buffet, a restaurant, free parking, and sanitary facilities; overnight accommodation is available at Chata Pleše.
The history of winter sports is documented at the Slovak Ski Museum in Podkonice. It opened on September 1, 2007, and is dedicated to 130 years of skiing history. The museum contains around 650 exhibits related to skiing and 85 ski boots. Anyone wishing to visit the Slovak Ski Museum should register by telephone in advance.
Culture
The Church of St. Martin in Podkonice houses a Gothic Madonna and Child dating from around the early 16th century, which is classified as a national cultural monument. The church itself was consecrated on November 14, 1819.
The Pavol Tonkovič Memorial Room has been open since 1998 in the municipal office building in Podkonice. It is a branch of the Literature and Music Museum in Banská Bystrica. Living folklore is also part of the village’s cultural offerings: In Podkonice, the Vysoká folklore group presents authentic forms of musical and dance folklore.
The traditional Fašiangová slávnosť celebration in Podkonice includes a Zabíjačka and a procession of the Fašiangovníci through the village. The Tonkovičove slávnosti have been held in Podkonice every two years since 2007. The Christmas concert Podkonické Vianoce is held at the end of December in the Church of St. Martin in Podkonice.
For June 28, 2026, a traditional Mass for the Feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius was announced in Kalište; a bus was scheduled to depart from the square in Podkonice at 9:30 a.m.
