Poniky between Church History, Karst and Cycling Route

Poniky combines sacred architecture, traditional crafts and cultural performances with a landscape where karst formations and designated routes reveal the various facets of the town.

Culture

Poniky is home to a Protestant church dating from 1784, with a Tolerance Tower dating from 1868. Another church in Poniky was built in the first quarter of the 14th century and features frescoes with Franciscan motifs from two main phases, around 1380 and in 1415. This church can be visited free of charge by prior telephone appointment. The Poniky parish also includes the filial church of Panny Márie Fatimskej from 1945, the Chapel of Najsvätejšej Trojice from 1846 and the Chapel of sv. Jána Nepomuckého from 1960.

At Ponický dom, a permanent exhibition offers insights into the folklore and cultural history of Poniky. It also houses an authentic exhibition about the writer and poet Štefan Žáry. Local traditions include numerous customs that have survived to this day; the Poničan folklore ensemble and a children's folklore ensemble present these local traditions. The traditional musical instruments Fujara and six-holed shepherd's flutes have also survived in the Poniky area to this day. The Fujara is decorated with engravings and burned-in ornaments.

The Vodný mlyn Jána Mračka water mill in Poniky is a national cultural monument. The production of household textiles also has a long tradition in Poniky. Churches, exhibitions, traditional crafts, instruments and public performances thus stand side by side.

Nature

The Ponický Karst lies west of Poniky and covers an area of approximately 4 km². There are karst formations in and around Poniky, such as sinkholes and blind valleys. In the NPR Ponická dúbrava national nature reserve, pedunculate oak grows particularly well in challenging terrain. Poniky is also considered an important mushroom-picking area.

Routes and Events

The Hradisko educational trail is 2.3 kilometres long, moderately difficult and takes approximately 1.5 hours. It is a self-guided circular trail for pedestrians that can be walked year-round in either direction. Another signposted connection is the green cycling route 5558, which leads from Ponická Huta via Poniky to Šalková.

The events calendar includes the cycling hill climb “Ponickými kiarmi”. It takes place in Poniky; on 13 September 2025, it was held for the tenth time. The 11th edition is scheduled for 2026. The children's folklore festival “Zdola ponickýho mlyna” also takes place in Poniky. The 28th edition is scheduled for 13 June 2026.
