In Banská Bystrica, the specifically named topics range from the Slovak National Uprising and industrial heritage to historical exhibitions and trails on Urpín. One significant date is 29 August 1944: on that day, the Slovak National Uprising was proclaimed here as armed resistance against the fascist occupation. Medený hámor, a technical monument of international significance, is also located in the city. The site operated continuously for almost 500 years, from 1496 to 1991.
History and culture
Medený hámor currently comprises four protected structures: “Hiarty”, “Dielne”, “Výrobné haly” with laboratories and electrolysis, and the “Vodný náhon”. Several clearly designated components of the technical monument are therefore located together within the site.
Another historic site is Thurzov dom, a three-storey burgher palace dating from the beginning of the 16th century. Today, it is home to the Stredoslovenské múzeum. The permanent exhibition Tranzithistory presents the development and history of the building, the city of Banská Bystrica and the region. The permanent exhibition at Thurzov dom features more than 2,000 collection objects from archaeology, history, numismatics, ethnology and fine art.
Trails
The Historical Tour begins at the Clock Tower on Námestie SNP. On Národná ulica, it includes the Štátna opera building and the Hotel Národný dom. The Barborská cesta begins and ends in Banská Bystrica and is divided into nine stages. It can be completed on foot or by bicycle.
Nature
Urpín is also associated with various named trails and locations. The Banská Bystrica-Mesto railway station below Urpín is also called “Malá stanica” and is a starting point for the serpentine trail up Urpín.
The Urpínska kalvária consists of eight stations, a chapel, a church standing on the hill, a tree-lined avenue and a small monastery. The Serpentíny Urpín educational trail is 3.6 km long, takes approximately 2.5 hours and is classified as easy to moderately difficult.
The thematically organised exhibition Príroda stredného Slovenska at Tihányiovský kaštieľ presents an image of the natural environment in the Banská Bystrica region using plant and animal exhibits.
