Župkov: Tetradymite, Wooden House and Educational Trail

Župkov combines a reconstructed traditional wooden house, an educational trail focusing on geology and history, and the story of a rare mineral. There are also local festivals, a sports and leisure facility, and a cycling route with panoramic views of the village and the surrounding hills.

Culture

The Ľudová drevenica in Župkov is a reconstructed traditional wooden house built on stone foundations. Following its reconstruction in 2014, the Ľudová drevenica was fitted out with a municipal museum and an exhibition on the traditional life of the local inhabitants. To visit, you must contact the Župkov Municipal Office in advance; information about visiting or the keys are provided there.

Another visible reminder stands in front of the municipal office: a wheeled armoured personnel carrier OT 65 is located there, commemorating wartime events. The filial Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is dated to 1994, while the Chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross dates from 1946.

The occurrence of tetradymite near Župkov is also connected with the history of the village. It is located in a small, now-filled-in adit near Kopanica Pod Angletovcami and is one of three known occurrences of this rare mineral worldwide. Andrej Kmeť and František Kabin gave the mineral the name Župkovite.

Nature

The Tetradymite Educational Trail is a self-guided, linear trail that can be walked in both directions and is accessible year-round, with a focus on geology, mineralogy and history. At the same time, it is an easy hiking trail. It leads from the centre of Župkov to the now-filled-in adit in Horný Župkov. The Župkov, Horný Župkov stred bus stop is designated as an access point to the Tetradymite Educational Trail.

Riečky is located in the Kľakovská dolina valley on the northern edge of the municipality of Župkov and is a sports and leisure facility open year-round.

Events

The public municipal festival Deň obce Župkov was held in 2025 and 2026. The 2026 edition included local performances, folklore groups, professional musicians, market stalls and an amusement park. The Župkovské vianočné trhy Christmas markets took place in 2024 and 2025.

Cycling

The Z Ostrého Grúňa do Píly cycling route can be ridden in both directions and is intended for more experienced cyclists. It offers panoramic views of Župkov and the surrounding hills.
