Brehy on the Hron: Pottery Tradition and Hotels
Brehy lies on the left bank of the Hron River and combines this location with a long-standing pottery tradition. In 1715, 16 potters are mentioned. Alongside the river landscape, this places a craft at the centre that shaped the history of the village over many centuries.
Culture
From the early 18th century until 1918, residents of Brehy transported earthenware on carts throughout the entire Kingdom of Hungary. The Hrnčiarske múzeum Brehy continues this heritage: it is committed to preserving the pottery house and the original, only still-functioning pottery kiln in Brehy. The museum also organises public events and leisure activities, as well as creative workshops and workshops for children.
The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Joseph the Foster Father is also part of the local cultural history. It was completed and consecrated on 5 November 1786. The village is also characterised by traditional linear development along the stream, dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Nature and Hiking
More than 90 percent of the cadastral area of Brehy belongs to the Štiavnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area. This also includes a small part of the built-up area in the Liešna district; the second level of protection applies in this protected landscape area. The landscape designation therefore extends into the village itself.
Hiking can be combined with local history on the Zabudnuté pamiatky baníctva v Brehoch educational trail. The route is considered easy and is also suitable for families with children. From Brehy, a yellow-marked hiking route leads through pleasant woodland to the 650-metre-high Hulín. A shorter route is the Calvary of Brehy: it lies below Kaliště Mountain in the Laštok district, on a small rise. A narrow path leads there in a few minutes from the yellow-marked main road; the path is short and easy.
Geographical Setting
Chlm Mountain lies in the immediate vicinity of Brehy. The mountains of Veľký Veterník, Sedlová Skala and Priesil are also located around the village. Further afield in the wider region around Brehy are the ruins of Hrušov and Šášov, as well as the Svätý Urban Church.
Water and Events
Lodenica pod Orechmi is a boat storage facility in the village of Brehy. The organisation OZ Lodenica pod orechmi is responsible for opening and closing the Hron at the start and end of the water sports season. It offers interested visitors activities ranging from ordinary hiking to rafting and kayaking, and organises the rental of water sports equipment in cooperation with the Dronte boat rental service. The Splav netradičných plavidiel usually takes place in Brehy in August.
