Čabradský Vrbovok: Hotel, Čabraď Castle and Nature Reserve

Nature

In the cadastral area of Čabradský Vrbovok, maintenance measures to protect reptiles were carried out in the Čabraď Nature Reserve and the SKUEV0036 Rieka Litava Natura 2000 site on 10 May 2019. These included, among other things, mowing and removing woody growth and Japanese knotweed from plots C-KN 1373, 1380/1, 1375, 1376 and 1377/1. Reptiles protected in the Čabraď Nature Reserve include, among others, the Aesculapian snake (Zamenis longissimus), the dice snake (Natrix tessellata) and the European green lizard (Lacerta viridis). The Čabraď castle hill and its surroundings are a national nature reserve with the richest known occurrence of reptiles in Slovakia.

Culture and History

Several houses with distinctive Hont architecture have been preserved in Čabradský Vrbovok. Another historical trace leads to Čabraď Castle: the ruins date back to a castle built in the 13th century. In the 16th century, the castle was converted into a fortress against the Ottomans. In Čabradský Vrbovok, a memorial plaque also commemorates Pavol Mudroň.

The local architectural history also includes the Protestant church. It was built in 1773 in the Classicist style. In 1924, the Protestant church was extended with a tower and reconstructed. Thus, different periods stand side by side in Čabradský Vrbovok, from the medieval castle and the Classicist church building to later alterations to the house of worship.

Routes

From Čabradský Vrbovok, a field path leads to Čabraď Castle in approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes on foot. Admission to the castle is free. The section from Čabradský Vrbovok to Čabraď Castle is 7 km long, includes 160 m of ascent and 170 m of descent, and takes about 2.5 hours. In addition, an educational trail leads from Uňatín via Horný Badín and Čabradský Vrbovok to Čabraď Castle.
