Uňatín: Trails, a Mill and Vibrant Village Culture

Uňatín lies in a flat valley of the Čekovský stream, a tributary of the Krupinica. The valley of the Krupinica River contains oak-hornbeam forests and springs; legally protected spring snowflakes also grow there.

Trails

The Krupina–Uňatín–Čabraď educational trail is self-guided and can be walked in both directions. It can be used as a walking route year-round and is also suitable for bicycles for most of its length. From Uňatín, the trail leads via Horný Badín and Čabradský Vrbovok to Čabraď Castle. There are alternative access routes from Krupina and Bzovík; both meet in Uňatín, where the second section begins.

Another educational trail leads from Uňatín to the “Uňatínsky mlyn” mill. It runs through the meandering valley of the Krupinica to the mill and then returns to Uňatín along a circular route. This educational trail has four stations. The “Uňatínsky mlyn” mill lies in the floodplain of the Krupinica River and has a historic bread oven in its courtyard.

Culture

The restored folk house in Uňatín is open to the public. It preserves an original clay oven, an earthen floor, historic furnishings, an old well and a bread oven. Above Uňatín stands the Roman Catholic Church of Christ the King, dating from 1957. The history of the mills is also part of the village’s heritage: Uňatín’s first mill was built on the Krupinica River and belonged to the Premonstratensian monastery in Bzovík.

In the first half of the 20th century, wooden tools and baskets were made in Uňatín, along with embroidery, Hontian embroidery, bobbin lace and decorated Easter eggs. Alongside the trails and the river valley, historic domestic and craft traditions are therefore also central to the village.

Community

Vatra is a long-standing annual community gathering in Uňatín. Earth Day has been a tradition here for more than 20 years, is also held annually and includes a joint litter-picking campaign in the area around the village. Uňatín has also revived the traditional custom of raising a maypole: in the village centre, the community jointly erects a maypole.
