Sudince: Hotel amid church architecture, viticulture and local history
Sudince presents a village landscape where church architecture, folk architecture, traces of former crafts and the history of viticulture come together.
Culture
The Evangelical church of Sudince is a single-nave Late Classicist building dating from 1858. It includes a segmentally terminated presbytery and a tower integrated into the main structure. The façade is dominated by a risalit framed by pilasters, with a triangular gable and tympanum; above the portal is a semicircular thermal window.
Sudince also preserves an intact street settlement with traditional folk houses. The farmsteads, residential houses and small huts display typical elements of Carpathian folk architecture. House No. 29 has survived as part of an earlier development of 19th-century stone houses in the Hont style.
History
Sudince has been documented since 1245 under the name Zyud. Later forms of the name were Usud in 1263, Wsudy in 1387 and Sudince in 1773.
The restored Sudinské močidlá are considered a landmark of Sudince and remind residents and visitors of the vanished customs of their ancestors. They were used until around 1952: in three stone-carved vats, hemp from the village and its surroundings was retted with water from a warm spring for the production of woven textiles.
Nature and Landscape
Sudince lies at the transition between the Ipeľská pahorkatina and the Krupinská vrchovina, as well as in the valley of the Lišovský potok. Visitors can see a linden tree in Sudince that is around 500 years old.
Viticulture
Historical livelihoods in Sudince included agriculture, livestock farming and viticulture. The village is one of the 13 wine-growing communities of the Hontiansky wine-growing district. A lane with wine cellars and huts leads towards the church.
Cycling Route
The Súdovská trasa passes through Sudince between the Berený háj viewpoint and Lišov.
The route runs over asphalt as well as unpaved forest and field roads and is intended for a cross bike. To visit Sudince, cyclists turn right; after approximately 1 km, the village ends. They then turn back to continue along the marked route.
