Senohrad: Baroque Churches, Folk Culture and the Landscape of the Krupinská výšina
Senohrad combines a distinctive mountain landscape with preserved evidence of local building and everyday culture. The village is located on the Krupinská výšina in the mountainous part of the Litavica valley. The cadastral area features varied mountain ridges, historic religious buildings, traditional customs and traces of earlier settlement.
Landscape
The cadastral area of Senohrad consists of varied mountain ridges that rise in the northeast towards the Kopaný Závoz ridge. The ridges consist of andesitic pyroclastics, tuffs and tuffites. The northern part of the area is covered with oak and beech forests. The mountains of Kopaný Závoz, Starý Laz and Jasený Vrch are located near Senohrad. Mount Belakova is also situated in the vicinity of Senohrad.
Nature
In the hunting grounds of Senohrad, the forest gradually merges into the agricultural landscape, forming extensive transitional zones known as ecotones. The most common tree species there is the Turkey oak, followed by European beech, sessile oak, hornbeam and black locust. Wildlife includes the red fox and lynx; wildcats are also present year-round.
Culture and History
The Church of Saint Emeric is a single-nave Baroque church with particularly elaborate interior furnishings. It was renovated in 2004. The electrical system was renewed, the interior was repainted for the first time in 70 years and the exterior façade was repaired.
Another historic religious site is the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk, built in 1748. It is a central Baroque octagonal building with a Neoclassical tower in front and a modern entrance hall. The chapel is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.
Older traces of settlement are also part of the village’s history: settlement finds dating from the Roman Imperial period were discovered at the Prepoštovica site in the cadastral area of the municipality of Senohrad. The ruins of Stará Huta are also located near Senohrad.
Senohrad is home to Ľudový dom Senohrad 20 – Múzeum tradičného bývania, a museum of traditional living. Ľudový dom Senohrad 20 is a traditional folk farmstead with a thatched roof; its preservation is intended to safeguard Senohrad’s original architecture.
Traditions
The Hrachovinka folklore group preserves local traditions on several levels. Its programme includes Fašiangy, Jarmok and Odchod na roboty, among other events. The group collects materials from older residents in order to preserve, continue and pass on local traditions to the next generation. Hrachovinka regularly takes part in the Čipka v Honte cultural programme.
