Cerovo: Church Art, Craft Traditions and Landscape

Cerovo is situated on the Krupinská výšina in a shallow depression on a flat ridge between the Litavica Valley and the Trpín Valley. The village combines a distinctive history of crafts and churches with a landscape of forested slopes, a designated wetland and the remains of Cerovo Castle. As a result, different historical and landscape features can be found side by side in Cerovo, spanning the period from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Nature

The steep slopes of the valleys near Cerovo are continuously covered with oak and beech forests. In Cerovo, the Rybník Cerovo pond is also designated as a wetland. The pond next to the Cerovo cemetery is used seasonally: during the winter months, residents use it as a natural ice rink.

The remains of Cerovo Castle lie south of Cerovo on Pustý hrad mountain. The ascent to these remains is steep and suitable only for experienced hikers. Another local point of interest is Farm & Camping Lazy, which can be reached via Road 2605 and then along a forest road.

Culture

The history of Cerovo includes a Lutheran congregation that was established around 1540–1550. The village's Evangelical church is a Neoclassical building. It was built in 1855–1859 on the site of a medieval church probably dating from 1559. The church is in good condition and continues to be used for religious purposes. Its altar contains a painting of Jesus by P. M. Bohúň, while the Neoclassical baptismal font dates from 1863.

The bookbinding tradition is also part of the village's cultural history. Local farmers in Cerovo learned bookbinding, particularly the binding of religious books in leather, from itinerant bookbinders. The same tradition also included decorating book covers with brass fittings. This craft heritage stands alongside other historic textile traditions: during the first half of the 20th century, linen and blankets were woven in Cerovo, and lace of the so-called Hont type was made.

Traditions

Several traditional houses of this type have survived in Cerovo to this day. Houses of this type continued to be built there until the 1950s. Their dimensions follow a clear, elongated form: they are 5–7 metres wide and up to five times as long as they are wide.

Further historical traces can be found in the Cerovo cemetery. It contains sandstone tombstones with semicircular tops dating from the second half of the 19th century. The memorial house in Cerovo is also associated with a figure from regional history: the politician and bishop Samuel Zoch (1882–1928).

On 12 September 2026, the Slovak ploughing championships with pairs of draft animals will take place in Cerovo.
