Bulhary – Hotels and Nature in the Cerová vrchovina

Bulhary is located in the northern part of the Cerová vrchovina, in the source area of a left-bank tributary of the Suchá stream. The landscape includes Veľký Bučeň, one of the table mountains of the Cerová vrchovina. It is 514 m high and forms the highest slope in the northern part of the mountain range.

Landscape

The area around Bulhary consists of sandstone and claystone, from which remnants of basaltic lava flows emerge. It is covered by beech, oak and black locust forests. Near Bulhary lies the Kerčík Nature Reserve between Bulhary and Šávoľ, on an isolated basalt outcrop. It protects an area with an abundant occurrence of the Bohemian pasque flower (Pulsatilla pratensis ssp. bohemica Skalický) in steppe-like, warmth-loving plant communities of the Cerová vrchovina.

West of Bulhary, on the northwestern edge of the Cerová vrchovina, is the Kameňolom Bulhary quarry. The active quarry, established in 1870, is a site where basalt and crushed stone are extracted. Green olivine, aragonite, opal and zeolites occur in cavities within the basalt.

Trails

The Cesta Márie Széchy is a 65 km-long historic route associated with the 17th century. It connects Fiľakovský hrad with Muránsky hrad. A 9 km-long paved road to Veľký Bučeň is also a red-marked cycling route and begins at Fiľakovo Central Station. An approximately 9.5 km-long yellow-marked hiking trail along the Fiľakovské skaly provides another route to Veľký Bučeň and leads through hills shaped by Neogene basaltic volcanism.

At the summit of Veľký Bučeň there is a hunting stand and an information board. Thus, in addition to the historic long-distance connections, the described surroundings of Bulhary include marked cycling and hiking trails as well as specific facilities on the mountain.

Culture

The former “Kráľ stromov” in Bulhary was an 800-year-old oak tree. A cross-section of this former oak is located in the town museum of Fiľakovo. Bulhary is also home to the Kaplnka Všetkých svätých, a Neoclassical chapel built in 1849. It was restored in 1893. The chapel contains a folk-crafted late Baroque altar dating from around 1800.
