Lubeník: Hotel between nature and industrial history

Lubeník reveals itself through several layers: landscape, industry, and railways stand here as distinct facets of one place. Nature

The municipality of Lubeník extends across elevations ranging from 275 to 650 m. The natural area also includes the Alúvium Muráňa protected area, designated SKUE 0285. It crosses the cadastral area of Lubeník, including the built-up area. Landscape classification and the settlement area therefore cannot be described as separate areas: the protected area explicitly also extends into the built-up part of the cadastral area.

Culture

A distinctive structure in the village is the Dedinská zvonica in Lubeník. The masonry building has a rectangular floor plan and a wooden upper section; it is topped by a Baroque cupola. The Železničné múzeum Lubeník has a different focus. It is located at Železničná 156 in Lubeník, inside the grounds of Lubeník railway station. It displays historical railway objects and equipment from Middle Gemer. The address and its location within the station grounds are therefore just as much factual key points of the museum as its exhibits.

History

Lubeník's industrial history is particularly closely connected with magnesite. In 1897, a magnesite deposit was discovered here and magnesite mining began. In 1906–1907, two double-shaft furnaces were also built. Today, SLOVMAG mines and processes magnesite in Lubeník. The company also manufactures and sells basic refractory products.

An earlier development led to the ironworks and smelting plants. In 1846, Juraj Heinzelmann bought the hammer mills and smelting plants and built an ironworks near Chyžnianska Voda. At the end of the 19th century, this ironworks had three blast furnaces and a foundry. The chronology thus extends from the construction of the ironworks, through its provision with blast furnaces and a foundry, to the later discovery of the magnesite deposit and the start of mining.

Cycling

The Gemerské spojky are unfinished railway connections dating from the Second World War. A cycling route runs along these Gemerské spojky from Chyžná voda in Lubeník to Slavošovce. The route thus connects the starting point at Chyžná voda in Lubeník with Slavošovce and follows the historic, unfinished railway connections.
