Magnezitovce: Hotel, Church, Tunnel and Viaduct
Culture
Magnezitovce is home to an Evangelical church that was rebuilt in 1933. It preserves the pulpit and altar from the former church, is distinguished by its unusual modernist architecture, and is one of the municipality’s most important tourist attractions. The building thus embodies both the memory of the former church and the architectural language of the new construction. The year of construction, preserved furnishings and architectural design point to different stages in the history of this same church building.
The Koprášsky Tunnel is also part of the town’s cultural and built environment. The S-shaped Koprášsky Tunnel—also known as the Koprášsky (MnÃÅ¡anský) Tunnel—is 245 metres long; passing through it takes approximately 45 minutes. It is freely accessible to tourists. It provides a 2.4-kilometre passage from Magnezitovce to SlavoÅ¡ovce. It was built from 1941 to 1944 as part of an unfinished railway connection through Gemer. The S-shape describes its course, the length figures refer to the structure and the passage through it, while the years place its construction within the railway project.
History
The Koprášsky (MnÃÅ¡anský) Viaduct is also part of Magnezitovce’s railway history. It is the last surviving of twelve bridge structures built during the construction of the railway. The vaulted viaduct is 120 metres long and 36 metres high. It can be accessed from Magnezitovce and is suitable for walks or bike rides. Its status as the last surviving structure in this series, its vaulted construction and the two measurements describe the viaduct from different structural perspectives.
