Rybník: Church, Crafts and Landscape in Gemer

Rybník is particularly defined by its Evangelical church, which contains fragmentarily preserved medieval wall paintings dating from the 1360s to the 1380s. They are considered among the finest works of medieval painting in Gemer. Rybník therefore contains a tangible testimony to the region’s art history.

Culture

The Evangelical church in Rybník is an early Gothic building dating from the beginning of the 14th century. Its construction history and the preserved paintings belong to the different chronological layers that come together at this site. On 18 December 2018, visitors to the church were asked to register in advance. The church is also included in the Jelšavský Circuit.

The traditional work of the inhabitants also forms part of Rybník’s cultural identity. In the first half of the 20th century, they were known for making weaving tools, trading in beeswax and wooden products, weaving baskets from bast and straw, and making mats from corn leaves. Traditionally, the inhabitants of Rybník also made wooden crockery. These activities point to craft materials and utilitarian objects that had a clearly defined role in the village.

Nature

The Drienčanský kras covers the cadastral territory of Rybník nad Turcom and is designated as a Site of European Importance (SKUEV0366). In the Drienčanský kras, dry grassland, herbaceous and woody vegetation is traditionally managed. It is used as meadows for haymaking and as pasture for sheep and cattle. The landscape therefore appears not only as a geological natural area, but also as an area with traditional forms of land management.

Several named mountains lie around Rybník: Železník, Tri Peniazky, Molnár and Murik. Each of these names belongs to the area surrounding the village and expands the geographical picture beyond the settlement itself.

History

Historical traces in the surrounding area include the ruins of the foundations of Drienok Castle. They belong to a castle that was built in the second half of the 13th century and fell into ruin in the 15th century. What remains are ruins of the foundations; the chronological classification refers to the castle’s construction and its subsequent destruction.
