Mokrá Lúka – Hotels, Churches and Nature in the Muránska Valley
Mokrá Lúka lies in the Muránska Valley below Mount Kohút. Churches, historic evidence of iron processing, protected plants and a mountain spring are among the topics associated with the village.
History and Culture
The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary dates from the first quarter of the 18th century and was originally Baroque. It is in good condition and continues to be used for religious purposes. Inside, it has rich Baroque furnishings, including a coffered ceiling decorated with ornaments and flowers, as well as an organ, an altar and a pulpit.
Another important sight is the Evangelical Church of Tolerance. It was built in 1785 after Emperor Joseph II issued the Patent of Toleration. The church is a national cultural monument and is located on the Gothic Road, whose historical heritage is explored by visitors. Churches built in the spirit of the Patent of Toleration were subject to specific requirements: they could not have a tower or an entrance from the main road.
The village's history of work is also documented in specific terms. In 1557, Mokrá Lúka had two iron hammers and three smelting furnaces. Thus, alongside the religious buildings, facilities associated with the iron processing of that period are also part of the village's historical context.
Landscape and Nature
Mokrá Lúka lies in the southeastern part of the Slovenské Rudohorie, on a floodplain and a terrace area at the confluence of a stream flowing through the village and the Muráň. The streams mentioned converge at the railway station and flow into the Muráň River.
In the surrounding forests, the Turk's cap lily, broad-leaved marsh orchid, long-leaved helleborine, bird's-nest orchid and mezereon are among the protected plant species.
Hvarná voda is a mountain spring in the forest above the mill. It is used as pleasant-tasting drinking water and visited via well-trodden paths in both summer and winter.
Annual Cycle and Cycle Path
The Mokrenský bosorátsky jarmok takes place annually during the pre-Christmas period, usually around Saint Lucy's Day. The event therefore falls within the special period before Christmas and is clearly defined in time as a recurring event in the village.
Construction of the Mokrá Lúka–Revúcka Lehota cycle path has been completed.
