Discover Revúca: Cultural History and Trails into the Landscape

Revúca combines Slovak educational and literary history with trails through the landscape. The building of the First Slovak Grammar School houses the Museum of the First Slovak Grammar School. It presents the history of the Slovak Evangelical Grammar School from 1862 to 1874; the First Slovak Grammar School in Revúca opened on 16 September 1862. The museum also offers large and small guided tours of Revúca. Registration for these tours is required at least three days in advance.

Culture and History

From the 1820s onwards, the Evangelical parsonage became an important centre of the Slovak national revival movement in Gemer and Malohont. A memorial plaque dedicated to Samuel Reuss and his sons is mounted on its façade as a national cultural monument. It commemorates the first collectors of Slovak folk tales. Another memorial plaque on the Evangelical parsonage in Revúca commemorates Pavol Emanuel Dobšinský and his work there as an Evangelical priest, folklorist, editor, poet, translator, teacher and playwright.

A Gothic church, built as early as the beginning of the 14th century, stands in the centre of Revúca. Its presbytery contains a late-Gothic stone sacrament house with a wrought-iron grille from the 15th century.

Experiences

Litterra transforms historical, cultural and material heritage into an experiential venue. The museum area is divided into four pavilions that bring to life the stories of the word, writing, images and the journey to the stars. At Litterra, visitors are allowed to touch, try out and create the exhibits themselves.

The fairy-tale sculptures of Revúca also stand in places connected with the history of the town. They depict scenes from literary works by the storytellers Gustáv Reuss and Pavol Dobšinský that have a direct connection to Revúca or the Gemer region. At the Krutohlav airship, visitors can sit in the balloon basket.

The Hviezdojed game takes place in various parts of Revúca. It works online and starts at the Tourist Information Centre in Revúca.

Nature and Trails

On Šturmanova hora, the lookout tower offers visitors views of Revúca, the peaks of the Slovak Ore Mountains and the entire Muráň Valley. One route to the lookout tower follows a 4.1 km-long paved forest road from Strelnica.

The 4 km-long Gemerská zelená cesta begins in Revúca’s square, leads past the railway station towards the former spa and runs along embankments and technical structures of the unfinished Gemer railway line. It is intended for pedestrians, cyclists, families with children and Nordic walkers.

Revúca is a starting point for summer and winter tours in Muránska planina National Park.
