Ratková – historic culture and hotels in the Slovak Ore Mountains

Ratková lies in the southeastern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains, on a floodplain and a terrace area in the valley of the Západný Turiec. Since 1995, the historic center of Ratková has been protected as a heritage zone.

Nature

On both sides of the watercourse, the municipal area of Ratková features a hilly landscape characterized by oak forests. Floodplain, terrace area, valley, and wooded hills give the geographic location several clearly defined forms.

Culture

Historically, Ratková developed into a center of crafts and markets. Several buildings and monuments from different periods are part of the townscape. The former Evangelical school in Ratková is a Classicist building dating from 1818. The town hall in Ratková is also a Classicist building, constructed in 1827. Ratková is also home to a monument to D. Bachát dating from 1940.

The Evangelical church in Ratková was built between 1520 and 1540 in the Late Gothic style and is part of the Gothic Route. Its presbytery has a Gothic net vault. A free-standing Baroque-Classicist bell tower was erected next to the Evangelical church in Ratková in 1786. The architectural sequence thus extends from the Late Gothic church and bell tower to the Classicist buildings and the 20th-century monument.

Getting around

The “Ratková–Ratkovská Suchá” cycle route begins in Ratková and follows the Rudohorská long-distance cycle route (012) along the state road toward Hnúšťa. To visit the interior of the Evangelical church in Ratková, the caretaker Bohuš Palúša must be contacted in advance and an appointment arranged. Parking is available in the square in Ratková.
