Hodejovec: Discover Nature, History and Hotels

Hodejovec lies among the hills of the Cerová vrchovina and combines a distinctly nature-oriented setting with a long local and church history. Almost the entire cadastral area lies within the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area. At the same time, Hodejovec is part of the Cerová vrchovina a Rimavská kotlina Natura 2000 site. As a result, several designated natural and landscape areas meet within a comparatively small local territory.

Nature

The protected surroundings also include Cerová vrchovina – lesné biotopy (SKUEV0357). This European Site of Community Importance focuses on forest habitats and covers an area of 2,626.48 hectares; its territory also includes the cadastral area of Hodejovec. The terrain itself consists of Tertiary sandstones. In the southwest, erosion-formed remnants of lava flows emerge. Remnants of oak forests and acacia stands are found there in particular.

The landscape is not exclusively forested. Agricultural crops are grown across most of the cadastral area of Hodejovec. This combination of hills, remnants of forests, cultivated areas and geological features characterizes the local landscape without reducing it to a single type of terrain. Hiking

A section of the 24-kilometre hiking trail from Hodejov railway station to Hajnáčka railway station runs through Hodejovec. The route passes through the cadastral area of Hodejovec for a distance of 1.81 kilometres. The village is thus part of a longer hiking route described as running between two railway stations; both the total length of 24 kilometres and the 1.81-kilometre section in the village are relevant for understanding the route.

Culture and History

Hodejovec was first mentioned in writing in 1427; at that time, the village was called Keregede. For many years, Hodejovec belonged to the Hajnáčka estate. The village's dominant landmark is the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Martin the Bishop, dating from 1737. Its construction history comprises several clearly identifiable phases: originally, it was a Baroque church built in 1737; in 1836, it was rebuilt in the Classical style; and in 1927, it was renovated, including the raising of the tower.

The Church of Saint Martin is a single-nave building with a straight altar termination. The presbytery is vaulted with a Bohemian vault. Another visible feature is a renovated two-colour façade. The church is in very good condition and serves its religious purpose.
