Rimavská Sobota represents a combination of cultural history, water activities and nature. The Gemersko-malohontské múzeum is at the centre of the cultural exploration.

Culture

Since 1910, the Gemersko-malohontské múzeum has been housed in the Neoclassical building of the former artillery barracks, constructed in 1850. The building is registered as a national cultural monument. The permanent exhibition was opened to the public in its present form on 20 December 1979. It is designed to give visitors as comprehensive an insight as possible into the Gemer-Malohont region. The museum also displays the Egyptian mummy Tasheritnetiak from Abusir el-Melek, one of five Egyptian mummies in Slovakia.

The Gothic Route recommends starting at the Tourist Information Centre on Hlavné námestie and first visiting the sights of Rimavská Sobota. The Gemersko-rimavský circuit of the Gothic Route is also presented as a tourist offering from Rimavská Sobota; it connects various sites and cultural monuments. The Neoclassical Roman Catholic Church of St John the Baptist, built between 1774 and 1790, stands on Hlavné námestie.

The Gemer-Malohont Fair in September is part of the cultural calendar. It presents products made by local and regional craftspeople, including wood carvings, leatherwork, pottery, textiles with traditional embroidery and bell foundry work. As of May 2018, the Aleja významných dejateľov on Námestie Š. M. Daxnera comprised a total of 19 memorials dedicated to historical figures associated with Gemer and Malohont.

Water and Activity

The Kurinec–Zelená voda recreational area near Rimavská Sobota offers swimming in the reservoir as well as in pools with drinking and geothermal water at 33 °C. There is also a children's pool with attractions and a water slide complex. The area also has boat, pedal boat and paddleboard rental, as well as tennis courts, table tennis, football pitches and beach volleyball courts.

The cycle route from Rimavská Sobota to the Kurinec recreational area is 4,330 metres long. It has two branches, starting on Školská and Hostinského respectively.

Nature

The protected area of Kurinecká dubina preserves ancient oaks. They provide a habitat for many protected bird and insect species, bats and other small mammals.
