Klenovec – Nature Reserve, Culture and Hotels

Klenovec combines a river landscape with protected Carpathian forests, living traditions and unique opportunities for air sports. Between the Klenovská Rimava, the Klenovský Vepor National Nature Reserve and cultural sites, the town presents a diverse picture that brings together nature, history, crafts and regional specialities.

Nature

Klenovec stretches along both banks of the Klenovská Rimava. The Klenovský Vepor National Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral area of Klenovec. Klenovský Vepor protects preserved original mixed Carpathian forests with primeval-forest stands. The important and well-known hiking route “Rudná magistrála” also runs across Klenovský Vepor.

Culture

An important cultural event is the Klenovská Rontouka folklore festival, which was established in 1979. Klenovská Rontouka includes traditional farmsteads with creative workshops for crafts, music, singing and dancing. A traditional folk crafts fair is also part of the festival. Alongside the performances, traditional forms of creating and working are therefore also at the centre of attention.

Klenovec is home to a Neoclassical Protestant church with a detached bell tower dating from 1787. The village also has a 20th-century prayer house of the Baptist Brotherhood. Both buildings are among the various religious and historical traces that shape the townscape.

A distinctive local craft tradition is Guba weaving. In the 1970s and 1980s, 36 families in Klenovec devoted themselves to this work. To this day, Ján Fotta is the only Guba weaver in Klenovec. The local history also includes the Jánošík tradition: Juraj Jánošík was captured in Klenovec by Liptov hajduks in 1713; this event is part of the local Jánošík tradition.

Activities

Klenovec has a paragliding school licensed on the basis of authorisation by LAA SR. It offers several courses for beginners and advanced participants throughout the year. Extensive meadows in valleys and on mountain summits, as well as forested slopes reaching elevations of up to 1,300 m, provide suitable conditions for paragliding. In addition, a round of the Slovak Cup series or a Slovak paragliding championship is held in Klenovec every year.

Cuisine

Klenovecký syrec is made from sheep’s milk and bears a protected designation of origin. It is therefore a clearly identified regional speciality with protected origin status.

Getting there

Klenovec can be reached via state road II/526, which connects Hnúšťa with Kokava nad Rimavicou. Several bus connections are available for getting there.
