Chrťany: Houses, Vineyards and Wedding Customs

Several masonry houses from the 19th century with extensive cellars have been preserved in Chrťany. They stand at the transition between the Krupinská výšina and the Ipeľská kotlina, in a flat valley of the Chrtiansky potok. The locality includes an unforested landscape of flat ridges crossed by valleys and formed from andesitic tuffites.

Landscape

The two landscape features and the terrain can be clearly identified in the location of Chrťany: on the one hand, the transition between the Krupinská výšina and the Ipeľská kotlina, and on the other, the flat valley of the Chrtiansky potok. The ridges of the unforested landscape are not covered by woodland and are crossed by valleys. Their rock consists of andesitic tuffites. Thus, both the geological foundation and the open form of the landscape remain closely connected with Chrťany.

Culture

The traditional houses from the 19th century have wooden and masonry pillars that extend the roof overhang. Masonry granaries with wooden pillars stand in the courtyards of Chrťany. Another architectural detail can be found in the vineyards: cellars with stone-built masonry entrances are set into the slopes. In Chrťany, houses, granaries and cellars thus represent different forms of traditional rural architecture, each with its own materials and construction methods.

History

Iron ore was mined in Chrťany in the 18th century. The history of the local school buildings is also connected with several surviving structures. The bell tower in Chrťany was part of the former church and later municipal school. The old wooden school in Chrťany burned down and, after its reconstruction, serves as a prayer house.

Customs

The Radostník wedding cake from Chrťany was shaped like a child. It was decorated with coloured paper ribbons, branches and candles. Until the mid-20th century, walnuts and iron objects were placed in the heads of a yoke beneath the headrest of the newlyweds as part of the wedding customs in Chrťany. During the same period, a yoke was placed beneath the headrest of the newlyweds; it symbolised a firm bond. Before going to church, the bride was given a clove of garlic so that she would have only one child. These customs thus preserve specific actions, objects and meanings handed down in Chrťany until the mid-20th century.
