Ďurkovce between the valley, nature and local history

Ďurkovce lies in a shallow valley of the Ipeľ Basin and at the southeastern foot of the Krupinská planina. The village extends on both sides of the Ďurkovský potok and has preserved its agriculturally shaped character to this day. Ďurkovce is also home to the wetland “Ďurkovce pri osade Peťov”, which covers 1.5 hectares.

Landscape

The location between the valley of the Ipeľ Basin and the southeastern foot of the Krupinská planina defines the geographical setting of Ďurkovce. The Ďurkovský potok runs through the village, which extends along both of its banks. The rural character also includes the agricultural character preserved to this day. The wetland “Ďurkovce pri osade Peťov”, covering an area of 1.5 hectares, forms a distinct natural area.

History

Ďurkovce is first mentioned in 1262 under the name “Obec Gyurky”. Until the 19th century, the village was a noble estate of the Gyürki family. The local development also includes the history of education: after 1945, a school with Slovak as the language of instruction was established in Ďurkovce. Later, Hungarian was also taught at the school in Ďurkovce.

Culture

There has never been a church in Ďurkovce. Until 1990, only a wooden bell tower was used; in 1991, a new bell tower was built. The bell tower “Harangláb Gyürkön” is now located in the centre of Ďurkovce on the main road.

At the beginning of the road to Ďurkovce, the simple wooden cross “Gyürky-kereszt” stands on the right. It bears a painted corpus of Christ and metal decorations, including a chalice. At the eastern entrance to the cemetery of Ďurkovce stand the grave monument and memorial plaque for Rákóczi Rozália. The grave monument is classified as a local monument, has been preserved and is in good condition.

A few steps from the entrance to the cemetery in Ďurkovce stands the simple metal cross “Egry-kereszt”. It has been preserved and is well maintained, was created in 1988 and is located at 48.13573, 19.17526, a few metres from the cemetery entrance closer to the village, on the left side of the path to the funeral hall.

Events

The municipality of Ďurkovce organises an annual sports afternoon for children and young people. Ďurkovce also presents itself every year at the festival of Palóc dishes in Kamenné Kosihy.
