Modrý Kameň: Castle, Puppet Theatre and Nature

Modrý Kameň is home to the valuable listed Modrý Kameň Castle complex. The ruins of the upper castle are structurally connected to the chateau in the adjacent lower castle.

Culture

The three-winged Baroque chateau of Modrý Kameň Castle was built in 1730 on the remains of the fortifications in the lower castle area. At the Museum of Puppet Cultures and Toys, an exhibition about puppet theatre gives visitors an insight into the history, development and present of this art form. The museum also has the permanent exhibition “Toys in Slovakia in the 20th Century”.

The Neo-Romanesque Roman Catholic Church of Saint Anthony of Padua is also part of the cultural history of Modrý Kameň. It dates from 1879. The church contains votive objects from the 18th century.

Paths and Faith

The Modrokamenská Calvary invites visitors to enjoy a peaceful walk through nature. At the foot of the Calvary of Modrý Kameň, the faithful traditionally attend services during the Easter holidays; a pilgrimage dedicated to the Virgin Mary takes place there in September. The Modrokamenská forest steppe is classified as an easy outing suitable for children as well.

Nature

Modrý Kameň has one of the largest chestnut groves in the country. Another natural area is the Modrokamenská forest steppe. It protects natural thermophilous forest-steppe and forest communities in the Krupinská planina.

The Modrokamenská forest steppe is located in the cadastral territory of the municipality of Modrý Kameň in the Veľký Krtíš District in the Banská Bystrica Region. In 1986, it was designated a protected area covering 12.1200 ha.
